Muscle Details

The Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus does not originate at the common extensor tendon unlike the majority of the other extensors.

Origin:

  • Lower lateral supracondular ridge.

Insertion:

  • Proximal end of 2nd metacarpal on the dorsal side.

Action:

  • Extension of the wrist, radial flexion (abduction) of the wrist and assists weakly in flexion of the elbow and supination of the forearm.

Extensor Carpi Radialis Longus can suffer repetitve stress insjuries from activities that include a tight grip, elbow flexion and wrist extension (eg: tennis backhand swing or frequent hammer use).
