Extensor Pollicis Brevis, Thumb and HAND Stretch for ALL

How to perform the stretch:

1. Start in a standing position
2. Choose the muscle or wrist you intend to stretch
3. Extend the target shoulder 90 degrees in front of the body and keep your elbow extended
4. With the palm inwards, flex the wrist down and slightly inwards
5. Flex the thumb into the palm and apply downward pressure to the thumb with the opposite hand
6. Hold the stretch for 20 Seconds
7. Release the stretch

The Extensor Pollicis Brevis is one of the main muscles used to give a thumbs up.

Origin:

  • Posterior distal 1/3 surfaces of radius & interosseous membrane.

Insertion:

  • Base of proximal phalanx of thumb.

Action:

  • Extension of proximal phalanx & 1st metacarpal of thumb, with radial flexion of wrist.

Thumb extension stress and repetitive use injuries can occur, eg those using one hand to remove or ‘flick off’ a container lid or bottle cap.
