Deltoid Middle, SHOULDER Stretch for All standing

Deltoid Middle, SHOULDER Stretch for All standing

How to perform the stretch:

1. Start in a standing position
2. Choose the muscle or side of the body you intend to stretch
3. Slide the hand of the target muscle up the hip, whilst flexing at this elbow
4. Keeping the elbow bent, slide the dorsal ‘top’ surface of the hand across the lumbar ‘lower’ back until it passes the opposite hip
5. Grasp the opposite arm at the elbow
6. Keep this opposite arm straight and abduct it (move it out) away from the body to increase the stretch
7. Hold the stretch for 20 Seconds
8. Release the stretch

Muscle Details

The Deltoid muscle is the big bulky muscle at the top of the arm and covering most of the outside of the shoulder. It is made up of three different sets of muscle fibres: Anterior, Middle and Posterior.

Origin:

  • Acromion of the scapula.

Insertion:

  • Deltoid tuberosity of the humerus.

Action:

  • Middle fibres (assisted by anterior & posterior) – Abduction of the shoulder.

Muscle strain injuries caused by forceful or repeated shoulder abduction/flexion overhead activities.
