Muscle Details
The Flexor Hallucis Longus is a rather large muscle that helps with propulsion force generation during the ‘toe off’ or ‘push off’ phase of walking and running. It also helps to support the arch of the foot.
Origin:
- Posterior inferior 2/3 of fibula & interosseous membrane.
Insertion:
- Distal phalanx of big toe (plantar surface).
Action:
- Flexion of big toe. Plantar flexion & inversion of foot.
Prolonged overuse may cause tendonopathy and inflammation in such activities as dancing (Irish & Ballet) or rock climbing. It is also a contributor to a condition known as ‘hammer toe’.
